100 Days of Marvel: Road to Infinity War - Day 20: Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (S1, E16-22)
These final episodes were by far and away the best set in the season. Every single episode mattered, and the show finally felt like it was moving towards a point without all of the distractions. By now, we not only know enough about the characters, but we care about them and their struggles. We can feel their hopes and their dreams, and we are now in the territory of wanting what they want. We want May and Coulson to resolve their issue, for them to rebuild S.H.I.E.L.D. and be okay in the end. We want Skye to learn about Ward, and we want Ward to turn out to be a good guy (too bad he doesn't). We want Fitz to tell Simmons exactly how he feels and for them to take their relationship to the next level. This part of the season challenges the characters, and tests everything that they have learned throughout the first 15 episodes.
And how can I forget - HYDRA! I still think Hydra, as a villainous organization, is misguided. I understand why the want what they want, but I really wish we get some more internal connections with the organization. Now that Centipede has been absorbed by Hydra, I would like to learn more about Raina and her long term goals. We got a whole backstory episode for Ward, and I still don't care about his character. It was so obvious that he was Hydra, and I was so mad that their crap with May threw them off the trail. The whole time I couldn't help but think about how Coulson ALMOST had him in that interrogation room. Then, the show tricked me by making me think that Agent Hand was Hydra at the end of one, but it was soon after revealed she simply though Coulson was Hydra.
I didn't like how she died. I think that an Agent of her caliber, a level 8 after-all, wouldn't have let her guard down in that situation, and it was frustrating. It was also obvious that Ward was Hydra, and every moment the characters did not realize it were trying. I was also upset with Fitz when he couldn't see the forest for the trees.
I like that Ward wants to be Tom Brady (something he mentions early on), atleast in his facade. This was great because I hate Tom Brady, and I hate Ward. It felt very pointed, and odd that the Patriots, just a weekend ago, played in and lost the superbowl.
Coulson is a true ...thug. He has so many dope moments in this part of the season. His acting is top notch, and I could feel every emotion he presented. This is espicially true in the episode where we meet Agent..director...Coulson's former love. Really saddening, and also bit those Men in Black flavors the show sometimes hits.
I loved seeing Patton Oswald here and I forgot he was in this. My first question as I prepare to watch season 2 soon is if the 2nd character Oswald plays is an actual different character, or if he is a resurrected character with an altered memory. Maybe they were twin brothers? If so, yikes. But they act 100% the same personality.
Lola didn't really do much in the season. I think she could have done more.
I am usually the first fan of new Black characters in shows, but I don't like this new black guy because he was getting between FitzSimmons. I'm sure we will learn more about him later. The actor does a great job, but FitzSimmons must needs be cannon.
