100 Days of Marvel: Road to Infinity War - Day 30: Marvel's Daredevil (S1, E8-13)

I don't care what anyone says about Wilson MotherF'n Fisk - this man is a gangsta. In the finale, during the scene on the bridge after he is rescued by the crooked law enforcement officers, and he merely walks to his next vehicle, amidst the bloodshed and killing, as if none of it was happening . . . That is how you know that he is a psychopath, one bad mamma, shut-yo'-mouth-crazy bad-ass.

All of the fight choreography in this whole series is pretty spectacular. It rivals even the best of what we get in the movies, with significantly less budget. I spent this whole season, but particularly the second half, dreading the idea of never seeing Fisk on the same screen as Loki, or Murdock on the same screen as Captain America and Tony Stark.

But going back to the GOAT, Wilson Fisk, the show doesn't talk about how much time is passing in a significant way, and because of this, Fisk and Vanessa's relationship moves too fast for him to be so deep in the trenches of love. So much so that it does kind of hurt his character for me upon this second viewing. I have never been a fan of Romeo and Juliet ONLY because of how long it takes them to fall in love, and upon doing so within days they are willing to kill themselves for each other, when in reality they could live without each other and be fine. Now, I do consider myself a romantic, but love, true love that lasts, takes time to build. Lust is quick, infatuation is brief.

I mentioned in my last post about how I hate it when heroes don't tell those closest to them about their identities "to protect them." If they hide it for other reasons, it has to be a damn good reason, but this show does the thing that I HATE! The show spends a WHOLE episode (out of only 13!) with Foggy and Matt on the couch hashing out the "how could you lie to me," and the "I've been worried about you the whole time."We have seen this so many times, and if the show was going to do it, at least it didn't have to linger. We don't see the full squad together again as a cohesive unit until the last few moments of the finale. But really, an entire episode where Foggy is yelling at Matt, complete with unnecessary flashbacks, stalls the engine of the show. Thanks, tropes.

Also, our hero Matt is a total hypocrite. I despise the "do as I say, but not as I do" mentality in the team setting. That ONLY works when you are a parent, and even then it is better to lead by doing, meaning you shouldn't do. Matt preaches about staying within the law to Foggy and Karen.
Matt is a hypocrite - stay within the law, but then breaks the law immediately a scene after.

I want to close by saying how much I love Daredevil. As a character, he is probably in my top 5 favorite Marvel heroes. If we factor in D.C., he is probably bumped down some, but as a kid he used to be my favorite superhero. This show does the character justice - sets up all the characters well, sets up a nice origin for our hero, and lays the stage for higher stakes in the seasons to come. My only regret is that the stakes were so small here. By now, we have seen some huge scale things in all of the other mediums. Coulson's team is dealing with world-ending catastrophes, the Avengers are dealing with world-ending catastrophes, Asgardians are dealing with world-ending catastrophes, and hell, the Guardians of the galaxy are dealing with, well, galaxy-ending catastrophes. Daredevil is dealing with a local crime boss for the entire season. We don't even know how the chemicals enhanced his . abilities. I guess we find out later, but IIRC we don't find out in season 2 either.
