100 Days of Marvel: Road to Infinity War - Day 36: Jessica Jones (S1 E7-13)
For a PI, Jessica Jones is not the smartest character. It takes her entirely too long to realize that Kilgrave cannot affect her with his powers. She never triest to find the blue pills that Simpson tosses out the window while Trish can't breath. It doesn't seem to dawn on her that anything Simpson said during his steroid induced rage could be helpful, you know, like how taking the blue pill could save Trish's life.
Other than the flaws of our protagonist, the second portion of the season is really strong, albeit slow in a many places. Luke Cage is out for too long during the finale, so much so that it drags it down. The hospital scenes could be sped up. All of her conversations and moments with Trish, Kilgrave, and everyone really, can be sped up ever so slightly to make the season feel a little tighter. Many folks online believe these shows should be 10 episode seasons, and I think that would work to make the show a little tighter, cut down some of the unnecessary "momentage" and keep things moving along a little nicer.
The idea that Kilgrave is getting stronger is frightening. Honestly, his powers rival the Avengers'. Imagine if he told Tony Stark to put on his Iron Man suit and go bomb a county, if he told Banner to get mad and become the Hulk and rage through a city, if he told Thor...oh man I don't even want to think about it! On the other hand, he has some good points about his childhood. How can someone who has his abilities every know what is real and what is right. He can only make his own choices so much, and it must, at times, be confusing. However, he can choose NOT to make people kill themselves. It actually must be tough to live with those powers, but he is a jackass who has the powers. I can't imagine what a "good" character would be like with these powers.
But for real though (I felt 90s just typing that), Kilgrave is a lunatic. The way he so carelessly commits atrocities, to even those close to him such as parents. His mother's death is TRAGIC. His father's death, even more tragicker (my blog, I reserve the right to take some creative liberties).
I really like Trish in the show. She never feels perfect, but never feels annoying, either. She did skirt the line, and there were moments where she was almost on the "why is she here" line, but I think her role in this fit well, giving Jessica a confidant and alley that was more reliable than any other, even Luke.
I also liked Duccasse and it was the same with him. He had just enough to do without taking away from the show, though if I am being honest he really only needed to be in the first half of the season and then he could have left. We didn't need the subplot with the annoying sister character that lived up the hall from Jessica, and that entire sublot could have shaved out 1/3 of an episode collectively, if not more.
Jessica's power play in the end was great. Though she is not the best PI, she can be cunning when she needs to be. The theory is that we will see Kilgrave in season 2, but I don't know, man. That neck snap seemed pretty final.
Season two comes out next week, and I am unsure where it fits into the timeline, but I will find a work it in. Now that I have re-watched season 1, I am really stoked. Not as stoked as I am for Infinity War, but pretty hype.
